Why do so many black women perm their hair?
I saw a survey it said, 75% of black woman perm their hair. And I WASNT surprised.
I know what some of you will say, because it is easy to maintain... but will you risk your hair falling out and thinning to have straight hair. Ive always found kinky hair attractive, it packs more volume and more unique looking.
Also some black women say they want long hair, but you can get long hair with your natural hair. Twist it or braid it over a prolonged period of time and trust me it will grow.
My hair is straightened for now, but i press it. I think if you want to straighten your hair just press it instead of perming it.
Any other womans opinion, please comment?
Black woman's hair??
of course you can just press Your white. On a black Woman's hair it would fall out regardless and to much heat would easily break it.
You fail to understand that Black Woman can't do whatever they want like most other woman with their hair.To perm it is to actually help it grow and STOP breakage,to much perms can cause breakage though.(every 4-6 weeks.)
Know your facts and dont presume you know everything about another race when you know nothing.
what looks good looks good and when the media portrays it you know its big.
Also Black hair is the most natural and beautiful in my opinion. Its kinky, curly and something woman of other nationalities dont have.
Black woman's hair??
I agree; I kind of feel sorry for the black females with perms that have disappearing hairlines, "beedy beeds" in the back, and thinning hair all in the name of "maintaining"
**I don't know what in the world the girl below me is talking about, she is tripping forreal; perm helps it grow? Lol yeah right
Black woman's hair??

Black woman's hair??
Well a lot of black girls got perms when they were younger. The bad thing is once you start you CAN NOT stop. If you want to stop doing persm you have to chop all your hair off and start from scratch. Most girls don't want to be bald and wait for it to grow back. So it's not really the women's fault it's their mothers because children don't decide if they want a perm or not when they're like 5. The mother gives them it.
Black woman's hair??
its a preference, just like some white woman perm their have curly hair, some people like to color some like to straighten, curl it.. it has nothing to do with trying to be something you are not, not many woman wear thier hair naturally, for the most part most womens hair are either color or permed( straight or curly perm)
Black woman's hair??
My hair is pressed....so no comments on the rest, because I dont put chemicals in it...
Black woman's hair??
I am black and I DO NOT use perms. I have naturally wavy hair. But I do have something to add to this. I hear so often that many black women do not have long hair. Well that is just NOT the case. My sister in law does not perm her hair either and she has traditional hair.
When a black woman wears her hair in natural styles, it grows, FAST. There is mimimal breakage. For example, micro braids, afros, twists, all allow the black women hair to do nothing but grow.
My sister in law does not even blow dry her hair. She washes it and leaves it wet, she puts pomade on it, then she takes a stiff brush and brushes it until it is almost dry. Then she pulls it back in a tight ponytail and let it finish drying. She takes her hair and put it in two big french braids and ties it down, when she takes it out, it looks like curly twists. Very pretty, and she has long hair, about as long as mine.
Black woman's hair??
I know what you're saying. I understand people wanting their hair a certain way, but a lot of the same people who give this schtick about their hair being manageable are the same ones who will chew you out about not getting one. I remember when I started wearing my hair natural, in like 2003, before it suddenly became fashionable, and I could barely walk to class without someone making some snide comment about how my hair looked 'wild,' and how I needed to 'take care of that.' But when I got the perm, no one had anything bad to say when I started getting bald patches.
But if you have "good" hair (which is another term I take issue with), people are all--oh, your hair is so pretty, blah, blah, blah. "Nappy" hair isn't much different than anyone else's. It's just hella curly, and grows a lot slower, because black people don't produce as much oils in their hair. That's it! It's not dirty, it's not flea-infested, and it is not automatically prone to thinning/falling out. After awhile, I just got fed up (again) and stopped. And as for the weaves, sometimes you want your hair long, or straight, or whatever, and it's okay to try it for awhile. But when it gets to the point where you're wearing this 5-month-old, nappy-@ss, moldy-@ss weave because you think it looks better than your natural hair, it's a problem. I think the same attitude follows with perms.
Black woman's hair??
Personally, weather it is permed, relaxed, colored, or natural you hair reflects your personal style. Some black women look good with relax hair while others look great with natural hair. Black women have the choice to do whatever they want with their hair just like any other woman. If you keep you hair maintained and healthy it will grow regardless of weather it is natural or relaxed. Manageable hair depends on the person's definition of manageable. I prefer my hair medium length and curly because it works best for me. It is all based on the individual. Plus, it goes back what is classified as "good" or "bad" hair.
Black woman's hair??
What it boils down to is preference. I prefer to do my hair the way I do it. I do not look good with short hair or kinky hair. Why do people care how other people do their hair? It's great that you do your hair that way, but why must everyone do their hair that way?
Black woman's hair??
I am wearing my hair permed right now, because I like it... I have thought about going back to natural though.. but I don't know yet, pressing the hair causes great damage too because heat is not good for most black women's hair
Black woman's hair??
Blasian; nice... I've yet to hear that one.
Black women will forever be scrutinized for the way they choose to wear their hair, so I think it's something we're just going to have to suck up and deal with - even though we shouldn't have to. Is it a lack of pride? Do we want to be white? Do we simply hate our hair??
Personally, even though I've worn braids for most of my life, I would never choose for any other races hair to be growing out of my scalp. And I'm sure that all if not most black woman would agree that there is no other hair texture that is as versatile as ours. But it can also be extremely difficult to manage. As another answerer has stated, it all has to do with preference.
I'm assuming that Blasian means Black mixed with asian, correct. Well this is not a personal attack, but you cannot understand. Your hair is not the same texture as the average Black Woman's natural hair; it is no where close in comparison, and I'm sure you know this. When the average american says kinky, they think you. They think this: http://static.taume.com/image/beyonce-Kn...
Well nooooo. No one would be complaining; that's not the reality of what we would have to deal with daily by going natural. Try something like more like this:
....wow. I tried to google a real black woman's hair for a good 10 minutes and came out flat.
To be blatantly honest, not only in respect to hair - but all things... most people only think about the present. Perming hair CAN BE A GOOD THING, regardless of what some of you may think. It's just that it takes a LOT of care that most people neglect, partially because it is expensive. But it's a "now" solution. How often do we do things that we know deep down may not benefit us a few months down the line? All the time.
It's time efficient. It's just easier for some women. No one has any place to tell a woman she should be weaving or braiding, hot combing (daily, are you kidding me?) hot ironing, or rocking an afro if she feels otherwise.
Black woman's hair??
Well the idea that ''black is less'' and ''white is superior'' has been believed and passed down for so many years what do you expect? Its a subconscious thing but slavery is the reason for many issues....hence, the one you just mentioned. Straight hair is ''good hair'' -- not true but believed. When you understand slavery, a lot more things will make sense.
Black woman's hair??
I love my hair natural and I wouldnt want it any other way!
Black woman's hair??
